Duke College Football Update

By Scott Ballister

David Cutcliffe pulled off a smart coaching judgment by quickly announcing Sunday that Thad Lewis might be his starter for this week's battle against the Kansas Jayhawks.

But I have only one problem with the way Cutcliffe went about this. It really is such a trivial factor and I hesitated to even mention it, although felt bound to do so.

Cutcliffe revealed Lewis was one of a quantity of players who had gotten the flu and sat out in practice time.

If you tell me Lewis is the man, I'm okay with that, largely because I don't have a say in the matter and you might care less what my opinion is. Although there is moreover the fact that you are the head coach/quarterback expert and know a bunch more than I will ever identify regarding that position.

There's no need to tell me Lewis isn't one hundred percent.

He clearly insisted he did not want to cause a qb debate, but, as the majority of people identify, qb debates 9 times out of 10 are created by fans and news organizations, not personnel.

If a qb controversy manifests as a result of Renfree's good play and Lewis' not so great performance then deal with it if the questions appear.

While I agree with his decision and swiftness of it he might have opened up a small door for criticism of his starter.

If Lewis doesn't perform favorably at Kansas then Cutcliffe will certainly face questions about whether or not Lewis is one hundred percent and if he isn't, why isn't Renfree playing more?.

So with respect to the coach's good I hope Lewis steps up and wins or has a great game, because the last thing the team needs right now in the wake of the positive of defeating Army is a debate.

Simply ask Coach K if you're seeking a second opinion. He has been forced to cope with 1 or 2 of situations like this one.
