Dustin Nippert Looks Good for Rangers

By Luke Blanchard

Dustin Nippert his case for maintaining the No. 5 spot in the Texas Rangers' starting rotation in Texas' 5-two victory against Toronto in the first portion of Tuesday's double header. Next in line, Brandon McCarthy, returning for his first because leaving the pitching rotation in June for the DL.

Nippert had far improved control than in his most recent start last week in New York. In the Bronx, he allowed eleven base runners (four hits, 7 BBs) and got 11 outs. On Tuesday afternoon, he got out of trouble to obtain his 5th win of the season and third as a starter. Nippert let up five hits, and walked just one. He lessened his ERA as a starting pitcher to 4.43 and on the whole to 3.91. It was Nippert's third successful outing in his previous 5 outings.

Nippert insisted there honestly was not much difference concerning how he pitched last week and on Tuesday: "Truly able to pitch good pitches. In NY, I suppose I pitched one curve successfully. The bigger predicament I dug myself in, I tried more to get away from it. I was clearly going the wrong way. I kept walking men, trying to create that ideal pitch.

"Yesterday, I was able to throw it in front in the count, behind in the count. Keep 'em away from my fastball."

Claimed boss Ron Washington: "I don't believe he was throwing too hard. He was equalizing with his change-up and his breaking stuff. Elevated his fastball."

Washington and Nippert mutually acknowledged Nippert was not throwing to protect his place in the pitching rotation. And Nippert insisted he'll gladly start or come out of the bullpen. Because the Rangers are in wild card contention, each Ranger's function augments in magnitude.

"I just wish to contribute to this franchise," he claimed. "It's good for us that we have more arms currently. Whomever's pitching well you can choose to start.
