They made the official announcement that the Dark Sun world of Athas would be the next campaign book for the game and that it would be released in 2010. This decision was made to the delight of many fans, as it is considered one of Wizard of the Coast's more fan friendly decisions to date.

Instead of traditional fantasy worlds like Dragonlance, Forgotten Realms, and Greyhawk, the Dark Sun setting takes place in the world of Athas. It is a desert like world that is more of a post-apocalyptic setting than a fantasy setting. The world is very harsh and brutal compared to traditional fantasy games.

Magic versus psionics is one of the biggest differences in the setting of Dark Sun. The world of Athas has been brutalized by years of magical backlash and destruction. As such, magic is much less common in the world. Its replacement is psionics, which is much more common and accepted among the population.

There are many unique races in Dark Sun that are playable character races. Muls are half dwarf and half human hybrids. Thri-Kreen are mantis like creatures with multiple limbs. Half-Giants are considered a playable character race as well. In addition, there are also the 'standard' races such as Human, Elf, Dwarf, Half-Elf, and Halfling.

There is some variation between the classes in Dark Sun and the classes from traditional fantasy settings. First, there really isn't any equivalent for Paladins, Monks, and Sorcerers in the Dark Sun world. As stated earlier, psionics are much more commonplace so the traditional 'magic classes' are either not represented or are drastically altered in this setting.

For anyone not familiar with the Dark Sun setting, it may be good for them (especially the game master) to get leg up on learning the world. The Tribe of One is a short three book series by Simon Hawke that is a great starter series. Also, the Chronicles of Athas is a five book series with multiple authors, so you can get a variety of writing styles.

Many of the Dark Sun resources available on the internet are free for fans to use. There is the Unofficial Dark Sun Wiki, a Dark Sun interactive Atlas for the World of Athas, the Official Dark Sun Discussion Forum at Wizards of the Coast, and many other product releases that are available if you know where to look.

The Physical Turmoil of an NFL Career

A 38-year old man sits inside a small High School gym in Wisconsin watching his son and his son's peers play basketball. It's a sunny summer day on the outside, but air conditioning keeps the gym cool on the inside. You can hear a slight murmur from the crowd and the dribble of a basketball, but little else. From most accounts, this is a perfectly comfortable Sunday afternoon. But this man isn't one of those accounts. He fidgets and sweats as if he was being placed in an oven. The man complains of hearing ringing, but no refs are blowing their whistle, no buzzers are going off. The other parents attempt to make small talk with the man, but he quickly feels overwhelmed and is forced to politely excuse himself. He gingerly steps down the wooden bleachers, looking as uncoordinated as someone who just finished a weekend bender. The man pauses at the door before reaching the hallway and watches his son fire up a shot as the first half nears a close.

1500 of 2500 former NFL players surveyed reported that they suffered at least 1 concussion during their time in the league. On top of that, another 600 players suffered 3 or more concussions in their career. Why is this important? It's important because concussions play a huge role in severe mental defects such as depression, post-concussion syndrome and chronic traumatic brain injury. All of these defects range from minor problems that can be shaken off in a couple days to something that can end one's life. In the case of professional athletes, it's more often the latter than the former.

One who suffers from concussions, especially multiple ones, is more likely to suffer from depression later in life. It shouldn't be a surprise that a recent study revealed that 87% of former NFL players suffer from depression. The shift in mood swings, poor sleep habits, and general down feelings that depression brings have serious implications on their overall well being.

Take this stat for example. While the average American lives to the age of 76, the average NFL player lives to see just 58. Much of this has to do with conditions like arthritis, depression, and brain injuries suffered from concussions.

Looking at these figures, people must realize the sacrifices pro football players (and other athletes who participate in contact sports) make at the expense of their bodies. People usually focus on the money, but these short-lived careers (the average NFL player only lasts about 6 years in the league) give athletes limited windows with which to build up a lifetime's worth of savings.

Woods had simply never lost a major after leading or being tied for the lead, and the world was shocked after witnessing today's events.

While fans were excited by the turn of events today, this really can't be good for golf. The PGA can't be happy about this, nor could any of Tiger's major endorsers. Without a major in 2009, people are beginning to write off Tiger Woods, thinking that he may very well be past his prime.

Woods hasn't regressed as much as people like to think. He's still won a very impressive five tourneys in 2009, and has staged some remarkable comebacks this year. Only the more serious fans realize this, but the media will be all about Tiger's lack of a major in 2009.

While everyone loves to talk about Yang and what he did today, this was a crippling blow to the PGA in 2009. There were simply no exciting stories that capped off the year of majors. Tom Watson nearly became the oldest golfer (by far) to ever win a major, before losing it on the final day. Woods went the entire year without a major, virtually unheard of during his career.

Yang will probably make few headlines anytime soon, and the once "sure prospect" of Woods beating Jack Nicklaus' record for majors one is suddenly not such a sure thing anymore.

What do people get to look to now? "Oh, I can't wait to see Tiger take revenge in the exciting series of FedEx cup event"? No! They are looking to, "Hey, Anthony Kim or Rory McIllroy are ready to take the torch next year."

Tiger must bounce back in 2009. He is the face of the PGA, and any story lines lacking Tiger Woods will do anything but help the sport grow.

We need Tiger to be Tiger and everyone else to watch in amazement as he wins Majors, no offense to them, but fans don't want Y.E. Yang, Angel Cabrera, or Lucas Glover to win. They want Tiger, and Tiger needs to deliver.
