The US Open Tennis tournament, originally known as the US National Championship in 1881, is maintaining one of the oldest tennis traditions in the world. Normally, the tournament is held over a tour week period from the end of August into the first part of September, as is one of the four Grand Slam tennis titles and the last of the tennis season. The tournament has five event championships, including doubles, mixed doubles, singles and junior tournaments. The tournament will be held of the USTA Billie Jean National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park, located in Queens, New York.
What makes the US Open different from the other Grand Slam events is that the tournament organizers do not allow the final sets to continue until someone wins by two games. The fast DecoTurf surface of the courts produces less bounce and friction than other tournament surfaces.
This year's tournament will take place from August 31 through September 13. The opening night ceremonies will honor and pay tribute to athletes' humanitarian contributions and endeavors. A special honor will be given to former Grand Slam champion Andre Agassi for his work with underserved youth with the Andre Agassi College Preparatory Academy. Agassi's academy is located in Las Vegas, Nevada and works to provide opportunities to students and graduated its first senior class this year.
The traditional kick off to the U.S. Open is the annual Arthur Ashe Kids day, and this year's central star is comedian Will Ferrell, who will be joined by Andy Roddick and singer Jordan Sparks to provide a wonderful family event. The day will feature interactive tennis activities in addition to the celebrity appearances and musical performances.
This year's US Open will feature some of the liveliest competition the US Open has seen in years. Roger Federer's recent Wimbeldon Victory over tennis superstar Andy Roddick has created an incredible stir amongst the tennis communities leading fans to wonder if Roddick will rally at the US Open to keep Federer from a sweet 16th Grand Slam win. Defending champion Serena Williams is always exciting to watch and is estimated to draw record crowds.
Tickets are sold in packages or by session, in which a session is either a single day's morning matches or a single evenings matches. The kid's day tickets are sold separately. The tournament will also have heavy television coverage on ESPN.
